Native to the Mediterranean, oregano is a perennial flowering plant that is related to marjoram, as well as other herbs in the Lamiaceae family, including basil, mint and thyme. Its small oval foliage, along with the entire plant, can be steam-distilled to make its essential oil. Oregano's fragrance is camphoraceous, warm and earthy with a notable spiciness.

History of Oregano

A revered herb for centuries, oregano has been appreciated even as far back as ancient Greece, when Hippocrates attested to its properties. The Greeks also embraced oregano as a key culinary ingredient, along with many other cultures, including the Turks, Spaniards, and, perhaps most notably, Italians, who made the herb world famous as a crucial component of pizza. Oregano simply smells wonderful, with a potent aroma that is both rejuvenating and relaxing.
