Native to North America, wintergreen is a low-lying shrub that produces small flowers and berries, though its essential oil is drawn from its fragrant leaves. Despite its notably fresh and minty scent, wintergreen is not a mint, but a member of the Heather family. Wintergreen is used as a flavoring in candy, gum and oral care products, but it is also valued for its high content of methyl salicylate. This makes wintergreen oil extremely potent, and it requires only a tiny amount distilled in a carrier oil to feel its therapeutic benefits.

History of Wintergreen

For ages, Native Americans used wintergreen for its natural qualities, chewing the aromatic leaves for their refreshing and bracing characteristics. Though it is no longer recommended that wintergreen oil be directly consumed, due to its intensity, it is utilized in muscle rubs and skincare lotions. With its woody, sweet and sharp scent, wintergreen presents a truly rejuvenating and stimulating botanical sensation.
